Sir,

Downing Street,

September, 1899.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of your despatch No.178 of the 7th of July, recommending the appointment of an additional Assistant

Superintendent of Police, to be selected from the

Punjab Police Force.

2. You have already been informed that I have

no objection to the temporary selection of Mr Halifax

to act as Assistant Superintendent of Police;

and as Mr May only asks that provision may be made

for this new appointment on next year's estimates,

I gather that the proposal can stand for consideration

when the Estimates are received together with any suggested

increases of staff in other departments which

may be necessitated by the acquisition of the new

territory.

In this connection I have to refer you to
